The American coast

In the States the dolphins are close in, so pick the boat, not the ocean.

Resident bottlenose live year round in the Gulf passes, the Lowcountry creeks and the Indian River. The choice is how you go out: a big cruise boat, a hull of your own, or a paddle at first light.

Where the pods are

Six coastlines where dolphin boats go out almost every morning.

Deep water within sight of a harbour wall, a reef the spinners sleep on, bays with pods that never move away. Six places worth planning a trip around, and the best boat in each.

On a cruise boat

Most dolphin watching happens from a wide, slow boat, and there is a reason.

A big hull holds its line in a swell, carries shade and a toilet, and stays out when the small boats turn back. It is the trip to book with children, a camera or a stomach that does not love the sea.

What it costs

What a morning with dolphins actually costs.

Every trip on the site, grouped by the price of a seat. Plenty of the best mornings on the water come in under the price of dinner.

Under $50

Two hours on a shared boat: Canary eco-cruises, Algarve cave-and-dolphin runs, Red Sea reef days.

$50 to $150

Half a day with lunch, a swim stop or a marine biologist reading the fins for you.

$150 and up

Private hulls, swim-with-wild-dolphins mornings and the long offshore runs.

What the sea decides

Dolphins are wild, and the sea gets a vote.

Three things decide whether a dolphin trip works. The hull: a rigid inflatable is thrown around by a chop that a catamaran barely notices, and it is the first boat cancelled. The hour: the water is flattest soon after dawn and the wind usually builds through the afternoon. The place: some coasts hold resident pods all year, others only see dolphins on passage. Nobody can promise you fins, and an operator who does is selling something else.

Three kinds of morning

Watch them, snorkel near them, or go out with someone who studies them.

The gap between a deck rail and a mask on your face is bigger than the price difference suggests, and so is the gap between a boat that chases and a boat that waits.

Someone reading the water

Out with a marine biologist

A biologist on board changes what you actually see. The fins stop being fins and become a named pod with a history, a calf that was photographed last season, a feeding pattern that explains why the boat is sitting still in an empty patch of sea. These trips also tend to keep the strictest distance rules, because the people running them have to publish what they do.

A reef the pods sleep on

Dolphin House, Egypt

Sha’ab Samadai is a horseshoe reef south of Marsa Alam where spinner dolphins rest through the middle of the day. Boats are held to the outer lagoon and swimmers stay out of the sanctuary zone, which is exactly why the pod keeps coming back. Most trips run it as a long day with two or three snorkel stops on the way.

In the water with them

Swimming with dolphins

This is the one worth reading the small print on. A wild swim means a boat drops you ahead of a moving pod and you keep up or you do not, which asks for a snorkel you are comfortable in and a tolerance for open water. A captive swim is a scheduled encounter in a pool. Both are sold under the same three words.

The close encounter

Some coasts let you get in the water with wild dolphins.

Off Oahu, Mauritius and the Zanzibar south coast, boats run before breakfast and drop snorkellers ahead of a moving pod. The rules are tighter than they were and the swims are shorter, which is the reason the dolphins are still there.
